A second major league sprung up and five of its six franchises would survive the league’s demise a little over a decade later. Two of the survivors adopted color schemes in their first season that would largely sustain them into the modern era. Cincinnati wore black trim, and black would appear, alone or in tandem with another color, in all of the franchise’s subsequent uniform designs. Pittsburgh wore black uniforms with gold trim; with rare, brief exceptions, black and gold has been featured on their uniforms ever since. The Cincinnati club, known initially as the Excellents, also debuted an ornate “C” logo that has reappeared from time to time and has been seen as recently as the 1950’s. |
