Los Angeles Halts Plumley's Hitting Steak Thursday, May 12th , 1977 Late in the game, all eyes in Wolverine Field were on Jerry Plumley as he stepped into the batter box. His 20-game hitting streak was on the line, and he had a zero in the hit column on the day. Sadly for Plumley, it was not meant to be -- the zero would stay and the streak would end. If there was a silver lining for Plumley, it was that his Detroit Wolverines won the game anyway, stopping the Los Angeles Pobladores by the score of 2-1. "Winning took some of the disappointment out of it," Plumley told reporters in the clubhouse. "Looking back on it, it was a great experience. Not too many players can say they had a hit in 20 straight games. It's something I will always remember." Plumley is hitting .320 for the season with 7 home runs, 24 RBIs and 22 runs scored. He has 40 hits in 125 at-bats and played in 36 games. |
