St. Louis Beats Pittsburgh, 5-2
|
With left fielder Randy Barnes leading the charge, the St. Louis Explorers defeated the Pittsburgh Industrials, 5-2, at Allegheny Field. Barnes, who finished 2nd in the NBL in wins above replacement with 8.0 in 1971, went 3-5 with a home run and a double, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. Bernie Tate picked up the save for St. Louis, his 5th of the year. With the win, St. Louis has a record of 36-46. Pittsburgh falls to 52-32.
St. Louis used a well-timed hit by Tom Guinn to capture the win. The shortstop socked a 2-run double in the top of the fourth inning to put the Explorers ahead, 5-1. Though it was his only hit in 5 at-bats, it was important.
"If you pitch well, you give yourself some opportunities," said St. Louis manager Ray Fleetwood.
