Win Goes to Blockbusters in Tight Contest
|
The Los Angeles Blockbusters earned a close win over the Milwaukee Dairymen, thanks in part to Ralph Weintraub. The Los Angeles right-hander, who finished 3rd in the ABL in wins with 18 in 1971, played a key role in the 3-1 victory. Weintraub, now 6-9, was the winner. In 8 innings, he gave up 5 hits, while striking out 3, walking 2, and allowing 1 run. The Blockbusters, at 42-45, inhabit 5th place in the National Baseball League Western Division.
The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Jim Quinlan came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Milwaukee pitcher Chris Davalos, he hit a 1-0 sinker for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Los Angeles on top, 2-1.
Quinlan called the win "a lesson in teamwork."
