The New York Empires defeated the Baltimore Lords, 5-4. Shortstop Dave Matuzak deserved a large share of the credit. Matuzak was 4-5 with 2 doubles and 2 singles for the Empires. Tom Duncan got credit for the win, improving to 9-3. He allowed 1 run on 1 hit in 3 innings. Dave Kretz earned save number 2 this season.

Paul Brower came through with a big-time hit for New York. The pinch hitter smacked a solo home run in the top of the tenth inning to give his team the lead, 4-3. It was his only hit, but it was clutch.

"We didn't go down without a fight," said Baltimore manager Steve Read.

New York, at 53-37, is 3 games up in the American Baseball League Eastern Division.
