The New York Knickerbockers had to overcome a fine effort from San Diego pitcher Ray Heath to win, 4-3, in 10 innings at Knickerbocker Stadium. Heath went 8 innings and allowed no runs. The winner was New York reliever Brian Williams, now 6-5. The loser was John Espersen. New York raised its record to 49-44 with the win.
New York got a clutch hit from Larry Fletcher. The first baseman launched a solo home run in the bottom of the tenth inning to win the game. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a kill shot.
"We didn't go down without a fight," said San Diego manager Joe Mack.
