Knickerbockers Suffer 3-1 Road Loss
|
The San Diego Captains and New York Knickerbockers played a tight game with the hosts claiming a hard-fought win.
The San Diego Captains earned a close win over the New York Knickerbockers, thanks in part to Ray Heath. The San Diego right-hander, who finished 5th in the NBL in wins with 17 in 1969, played a key role in the 3-1 victory. Heath got the win, improving to 11-3. He gave up 5 hits and walked 0 over 7 innings. He allowed 1 run. John Espersen was credited with the save for San Diego, his 3rd of the season.
A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the bottom of the seventh, with the game tied, Ron Roe was at the plate when San Diego scored 1 on an error. The miscue enabled the Captains to go in front, 2-1.
"We busted our tails," said New York manager Timothy Widholm. "But we came up short."
The first-place Captains, at 58-37, now lead their division by 6 games.
