Victory Takes Captains to 65-45
San Diego turned a good performance from starting pitcher Ed Payne into a 4-1 triumph over the St. Louis Explorers at Corps of Discovery Stadium. Payne got the win, improving to 11-3. He gave up 4 hits and walked 1 over 7.2 innings. He allowed 1 run. John Espersen locked down his 5th save.

With the game tied, 1-1, in the top of the seventh, Payne had a key at-bat for San Diego. With runners on 1st and 2nd, Payne hit a run-scoring single off Robbie Goolsby, making the score 2-1, Captains.

"I'm happy we won," said Payne. "That's first and foremost. My goal is for the team to win the day I pitch, however it's done."
