Baltimore 8-2 Losers to Empires
|
New York Empires starter Jon Pierce hurled his team past the Baltimore Lords, 8-2. Pierce, who finished 3rd in the ABL in ERA with 2.30 in 1970, went the distance for New York. He gave up 2 runs on 10 hits. With the victory, the Empires upped their record to 58-53.
Roger Hickey had a big bases-clearing triple for the Empires in the bottom of the fourth inning. With New York leading 3-2 and the bases loaded, he got a screwball from Jose Rodriguez, who finished 4th in the ABL in strikeouts with 191 in 1963, and swatted a triple to left-center. It was his 5th triple of the season, and more importantly, it put the Empires ahead, 6-2.
"I had my mind made up to go the distance," said Pierce.
