Empires Shut Out Drillers, 3-0
|
In a low-scoring game between the New York Empires and the Houston Drillers, pitcher Larry Stanford was masterful on the mound. The New York left-hander spearheaded his team's 3-0 win. Stanford, the winner, moves to 13-9. He threw 7 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 6 and giving up 3 walks. The 4th-place Empires are 59-64.
Dave Martin had a big 2-run home run for the Empires in the bottom of the fourth inning. With New York leading 1-0 and a runner on 2nd, he sized up a fastball from Francisco Castro, who led the NBL in wins with 20 last year, and punished it. The result was his 8th home run of the season, which put the Empires on top, 3-0.
"We put together a nice win," Stanford said.
