New York Absorbs 6-1 Loss to St. Louis
|
The St. Louis Explorers downed the New York Knickerbockers, 6-1, at Knickerbocker Stadium. Stellar pitching by Dave Gilson had a lot to do with it. The right-hander handcuffed his opponent all game. Gilson, now 10-8, was the winner. In 9 innings, he gave up 7 hits, while striking out 5, walking 2, and allowing 1 run. The victory gives St. Louis a record of 73-57.
Charlie Bartels had a big 2-run home run for the Explorers in the top of the third inning. With St. Louis leading 1-0 and a runner on 2nd, he sized up a sinker from Vern Gould, who led the NBL in wins with 26 in 1962, and punished it. The result was his 20th home run of the season, which put the Explorers on top, 3-0.
"Dave executed his pitches at a high level," said St. Louis manager Ray Fleetwood.
