Explorers Wins, 2-0, as Chapa Mystifies New York
|
It wasn't easy but the St. Louis Explorers made it look that way.
Starter Jose Chapa shut out the New York Knickerbockers despite having what he later called "sub-par" stuff, and the St. Louis Explorers cruised to victory, 2-0. Chapa allowed only 4 hits and rang up 9 strikeouts but insisted later that he did not deserve primary credit for the win.
"It didn't feel quite right today, but I got a lot of help to get through," he said. "I trusted my catcher and the guys behind me bailed me out more than once when I screwed up."
Chapa has posted a 7-3 record for the year with a 2.92 ERA. Teams are hitting .243 against him and he has rung up 58 strikeouts in 80 innings.
