Dario Perez of the Dallas Wranglers was on top of his game today.

The 23-year-old tantalized the New York Empires with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest and came away with a 1-0 shutout.

"He had the changeup working," New York manager John Harris said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Dallas hurler had 11 strikeouts, gave up 2 walks and surrendered 2 hits in his complete-game effort.

Perez told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

Perez has a 12-8 season record so far. In 28 starts, he has fanned 252 batters in 221.2 innings with a 1.83 ERA.
