New York Wins, 3-2, in Extra Innings
|
Boston got a terrific performance from pitcher Jeff Butler, but it wasn't enough to beat the New York Empires. New York won the Atlantic Avenue Grounds contest, 3-2. Butler threw 7.1 innings of 4-hit ball for the losing team. New York reliever Jock Casey picked up the win, raising his record to 2-0. Brian Long was tagged with the loss. Earning the save was Jim Olson. He's now cashed in 4 of 7 save opportunities.
New York used a timely hit from Bill Howard to get the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the 12th inning to put the Empires ahead, 3-2. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it made an impact.
During his postgame press conference, Empires manager John Harris told reporters that he expected a tight game from the get-go. "This had the potential to go down to the wire, and it certainly didn't disappoint," he said, later quipping, "it might've been a little less nerve-racking if I had been watching the game from my couch!"
The win for the Empires raised their record to 69-67.
