Empires Suffer 4-2 Loss to Detroit
|
The Detroit Wolverines got a stellar effort from pitcher Juan Rodriguez, helping Detroit score a win over the visiting New York Empires, 4-2. Rodriguez, now 17-5, was the winner. In 7.2 innings, he gave up 4 hits, while striking out 4, walking 5, and allowing 2 runs. John Gaylord recorded his 14th save for Detroit.
The Wolverines got an important contribution from center fielder Tom Wade, who in the bottom of the third punched a first pitch fastball into right for a 2-run double. It was his 18th double of the season and put the Wolverines ahead, 4-0.
New York manager John Harris said he was "mildly disappointed" with the loss. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them," he said.
The first-place Wolverines, at 93-55, now lead their division by 11½ games.
