Emeralds Pocket 2-1 Win Against Detroit
|
The Seattle Emeralds did just enough to sneak past the Detroit Wolverines, 2-1, at Puget Field. Seattle pitcher Dave Torre, in particular, had a standout performance. Torre, now 5-13, was the winner. In 6 innings, he gave up 7 hits, while striking out 2, walking 1, and allowing 1 run. Darrell Klug converted his 34th save in 40 tries.
The Wolverines had been locked in a 1-1 tie with the Emeralds going into the bottom of the sixth inning. That changed quickly when the slugging first baseman Ramon Montoya came to the plate. Montoya hit a run-scoring double on a full count splitter from Detroit hurler Doug Fiorentino. It was Montoya's 20th double of the year.
"Tough loss," said Detroit manager Kurt Peterson. "Tough one to swallow."
The Emeralds raised their record to 60-95.
