San Diego 12-5 After 7-2 Win Over St. Louis
|
The San Diego Captains and St. Louis Explorers completed their game despite the inclement weather.
Mark Pike, who finished 4th in the NBL in innings pitched with 263.2 last year, was locked in. The right-hander led the San Diego Captains to a 7-2 win against the St. Louis Explorers at Corps of Discovery Stadium. Pike, who finished 3rd in the NBL in wins with 18 in 1971, went the distance for San Diego. He gave up 2 runs on 3 hits.
San Diego used a clutch at-bat from Earl Peters to capture the win. The catcher hammered a 3-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to put the Captains ahead, 4-2. It was his lone hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.
"Trying isn't good enough in this league," said Peters. "You've got to get results."
St. Louis, with the loss, is 8-8.
