Drillers Deal Seagulls 8-5 Loss
|
The Houston Drillers defeated the San Francisco Seagulls, 8-5, at Mission Field. Houston first baseman Mike Wells had a superb performance. He went 2 for 3 with 2 singles and a walk. Tom McAteer got the win, improving to 2-2. He pitched 5 innings, giving up 6 hits and 5 runs, while striking out 0 and walking 4. Dick Knight earned the save for Houston.
Tom McAteer had a big 2-run home run for the Drillers in the top of the fourth inning. With Houston leading 3-2 and a runner on 1st, he got a sinker from Paul Wiley, who finished 4th in the NBL in strikeouts with 174 in 1959, and swatted a home run to left. It was his 1st home run of the season, and more importantly, it put the Drillers ahead, 5-2.
"It's nice to see a lot of guys make contributions," said Drillers manager Nate Nilsson.
With the win, Houston goes to 9-9.
