Captains Win, 6-5, Versus Denver
|
Fans of the San Diego Captains who packed the stands for the home opener were rewarded with a San Diego win over the visiting Denver Burros, 6-5. Jack DeWitt started for the home team against Frank Combs. Frank Combs earned accolades for his performance. San Diego reliever Ron Gordon picked up the win, raising his record to 1-0. Joe Hamby was tagged with the loss.
The decisive blow was delivered by Jimmy Locricchio in the bottom of the ninth when he hit a bases-clearing double off 31-year old right-handed pitcher Joe Hamby to win the game for San Diego. The home crowd went nuts.
"We'll put this win in our pocket and go after the next one," said Locricchio.
