Burros Drop Bulls, 6-4, with Late Score
|
The Denver Burros handed the Kansas City Bulls a 6-4 defeat at Independence Field. Third Baseman Dick Hoffmeier starred for Denver. He went 2-4 with a home run and a walk. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. Joe Hamby, who is tied for 2nd in the NBL in saves with 9, was the winner in relief. His record is now 3-2. The losing pitcher was Dennis Greenlee. Willie Purter, who finished 4th in the ABL in ERA with 2.29 in 1964, nailed down the save.
Guillermo Morales was 2 for 4 with 2 singles for Denver. The three-time All-Star had a key at-bat in the top of the ninth. With one out and the bases loaded, he broke a 4-4 tie with a run-scoring sacrifice fly off Dennis Greenlee. It was his 32nd RBI of the season.
"I'm just trying to make good contact," said Hoffmeier, "one at-bat at a time."
The win lifted the Denver record to 20-16.
