Andy Humphrey pitched a gem to lead New York to victory over the Toronto Hurons, 4-1. Humphrey, the winner, moves to 1-0. He threw 7 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 3 and giving up 4 walks. Jack Neenan closed it out for his 1st save.
Dave Matuzak, who is a two-time All-Star, helped out the New York cause in the bottom of the sixth inning with a run-scoring single. For the game, the shortstop was 2-4 with 2 singles.
"Coulda, shoulda, woulda," said Toronto manager Jim Burns. "We had our chances and didn't cash in."
Toronto falls to 2-2.
