Knickerbockers Top Cleveland, 2-1
|
Crowds lined up early in front of Knickerbocker Stadium, eagerly awaiting the start of the 1968 Major League Baseball season. On the mound was Tim McDonald for the visiting Cleveland Bobcats and Ollie Hundley for the hometown New York Knickerbockers. In a spirited contest, the Knickerbockers pulled out the win, defeating the Bobcats by the score of 2-1. Especially impressive was Tim McDonald. The winner was Steve Eaton in relief. His record improves to 1-0. Matt Rutledge took the loss.
Charlie Fee was the walk-off hero for New York. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Knickerbockers catcher hit a dramatic run-scoring single to send the teams home.
"Both teams played hard," said New York manager William Bowen.
