Pierce Twirls 3-0 Shutout
|
The Detroit Wolverines had no answer for New York Empires pitcher Jon Pierce. They failed to score a single run against him, losing, 3-0. Detroit managed only 5 hits off Pierce, who had 7 strikeouts.
The extraordinarily popular Pierce got a standing ovation from the hometown crowd as he left the field, the applause continuing until he returned from the dugout to tip his cap to the crowd.
"Empires fans are the best fans, in my opinion," he said. "It's a great feeling to throw a shutout under any circumstances, but to do it with the crowd behind you like that is just incredible."
In 10 starts this year, Pierce has posted 5 wins while suffering 2 losses. He has pitched 73 innings, allowed 56 hits, struck out 49 and has a 3.33 ERA.
