The Washington Eagles ushered in the 1974 season with a win versus the New York Knickerbockers at Monument Field. The final score was 8-7 in 11 innings. Catcher Jesus Olvera had a standout performance. Washington reliever Ricky Grill was the winner. His record is now 1-0. Albert Green took the loss.

The clutch at-bat came in the bottom of the 11th inning, when Washington first baseman Bob Raab, facing Tim Fried, had a run-scoring walk. It gave the Eagles the 8-7 win.

"We earned that one," said Olvera.
