Down to Defeat Goes New York, 5-4
New York right fielder Al Castro had a good game, even if his team did not. The Empires dropped a 5-4 decision to Seattle at Queens Field. Castro went 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. Dave Gilson was the winner. He's now 2-5. The loser was Jon Pierce. The Emeralds improved their record to 34-29 by beating New York.

Seattle second baseman Gary Patterson contributed a timely at-bat in the top of the seventh. With two down, he hit a curveball to left-center field for a run-scoring single. It was his 46th hit of the season and put the Emeralds ahead, 5-0.

"It was our day today," Patterson told the Seattle Chronicle. "But we've got to keep our nose to the grindstone."
