The New York Empires picked up a win at San Vicente Park, taking down the Los Angeles Pobladores, 5-2. Starting pitcher Jon Pierce was a big reason why. Pierce, the winner, moves to 8-3. He threw 6.2 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 4 and giving up 4 walks. Jack Pratt recorded the save, his 10th.

Eddie Ellison was 3-4 with 3 singles. He drove in 3 runs for New York. The former first round draft pick had a key at-bat in the top of the fourth. With no one out and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he broke a 0-0 tie with a 2-run single off Jim Arndt. It was his 52nd hit of the season.

"There's a lot of passion in our clubhouse," said Pierce. "When we put it together we're a great ball club."

New York is now 38-28, Los Angeles 33-33.
