San Diego Captains Ship Gilson to St. Louis Monday, April 11th , 1977 You can't always get what you want, but sometimes you find a deal anyway. The Baseball News Network is reporting that San Diego and St. Louis have made a swap with 30-year old RHP Dave Gilson being shipped to the Explorers and in return the Captains would get a 4th round draft pick. San Diego general manager Joe Mack said the two sides were close to a blockbuster trade before agreeing upon a smaller scale transaction. "This is just a bit of housekeeping compared to what we wanted to do," he said. "I won't name names, but the potential deal we were close to making would have certainly grabbed some headlines." A source inside the San Diego organization said the two sides might not be done dealing, and another transaction could be in the works. San Diego will retain a portion of Gilson's remaining contract. In his lifetime, the 30-year-old Gilson has won 81 and lost 85, piling up 806 strikeouts and 428 walks in 1565.1 innings with a 3.60 ERA. Opponents have hit .257 against him. |
