5 Hits for Bobcats Harper
Tuesday, May 14th , 1974
Bill Harper was on quite a roll as he knocked the ball all over Lakefront Stadium, collecting 5 hits. His day of glory wasn't able to win the game, however. The San Diego Captains got the 5-4 victory over the Cleveland Bobcats.

"I never realized that a few hits could cause so much commotion," the third baseman said in the clubhouse after the game, crowded by reporters. "Headlines and highlights are great, but it takes a lot of luster off it that we lost."

After his first couple of hits, all eyes in the ballpark were on him each time Harper stepped into the batter's box. Even some opposing fans were pulling for him, knowing they were watching a little slice of league history unfold.

When asked what the secret of hitting so well is, he smiled and said "relax, concentrate, and hit the ball where they ain't."

That's exactly what he did, as Harper finished the game with 5 hits in 6 at-bats and a line in the record book. Bill Harper singled in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, flied out in the 4th, singled in the 7th, singled in the 9th and singled in the 11th.

In 31 games Harper is hitting .287 this season with 31 hits, 4 home runs, 10 RBIs, 30 walks, .446 OBP and has scored 20 runs.
