Fonseca at His Best, Blanks Cincinnati
Friday, June 28th , 1974
The Cincinnati Packers were almost helpless in their 7-0 loss to the Washington Eagles and hurler Alex Fonseca. Fonseca kept the Packers confused all game, spinning a 8-hit shutout.
"Tip your hat to Fonseca," Cincinnati manager Martin Abresch said in a postgame interview. "He kept us off balance all night."
The 29-year-old left-hander had no walks and 10 strikeouts in a strong performance.
"It just happened to be one of those games where even when I made mistakes, they either fouled them off or someone would make a fine defensive play," Fonseca said. "It was just one of those games that things went my way."
Up to now Fonseca has compiled an ERA of 5.50 with a 5-12 mark over 19 starts. He has 71 strikeouts in 126 innings and has held opponents to a .313 batting average.
