Gruber Belts Bunch of Base Hits
Sunday, August 15th , 1976
It's not something you read about in the sports pages every day -- a 5-for-5 day. For many, it might come around only once in a career -- and for Rick Gruber, it came around today.
The 24-year-old first baseman scattered hits all over Knickerbocker Stadium to pace the 14-12 Cleveland Bobcats victory over the New York Knickerbockers.
New York skipper Sean Kelly told reporters in the press room that "Gruber deserves a hat-tip."
"He hit some good pitches against us," he said. "In fact, according to our scouting reports, Gruber hit several that he is not supposed to be able to hit."
Rick Gruber singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, walked in the 6th, singled in the 7th, singled in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 9th.
In his season totals, Gruber has 7 home runs, .341 BA, .414 OBP, 46 RBIs and 47 runs scored. He has played in 96 games.
