Los Angeles Halts Sledd's Hitting Steak
Sunday, July 14th , 1974
Chicago first baseman John Sledd came into today's game against the Los Angeles Blockbusters on a hot streak. He left on a cold one.
The Blockbusters did their jobs well, beating the Chicago Traders, 1-0, and holding Sledd hitless to snap his 20-game hitting streak. The 27-year-old first baseman had a few words to say after finishing 0-for-3, telling reporters only that he "came up short."
"What John did was exciting and quite an achievement," said Traders manager Larry Link. "It's tough enough to get one hit in this league, much less go 20 games in a row. I'm even more proud of the way he handled the press coverage. He never let the frenzy get to him or affect his play."
This season, Sledd is hitting .327 with 112 hits, 9 home runs, 51 RBIs, scored 38 runs and played in 87 games.
