Knickerbockers Flame Out Against Trent, Explorers
Friday, May 10th , 1968
The New York Knickerbockers had no answer today for St. Louis Explorers pitcher Jimmy Trent. They failed to score a single run against him, losing 4-0. New York managed only 6 hits off Trent, who had 9 strikeouts.
The extraordinarily popular Trent got a standing ovation from the hometown crowd as he left the field, the applause continuing until he returned from the dugout to tip his cap to the crowd.
"Explorers fans are the best fans, in my opinion," he said. "It's a great feeling to throw a shutout under any circumstances but to do it with the crowd behind you like that is just incredible."
Thus far this season, Trent has worked 55 innings with 37 strikeouts en route to a 3-3 record and a 2.45 ERA.
