Witness York of the Cincinnati isn't just a strong veteran presence in Major League Baseball. He's also one of the league's top players.

At the age of 36, the left fielder has been named the recipient of the National Baseball League Most Valuable Player Award for 1961.

"At my age you sometimes think of possibly retiring, I'm sure glad I didn't," he said.

On the season, the McKinney, Texas native hit .324 and got on base at a .445 clip. He hit 28 home runs as well as 97 runs batted in and 127 runs scored.

Harold Batkin of the Cleveland Bobcats finished second in voting, while Ralph King of the Cincinnati Packers finished third.
