Boston got a terrific performance from pitcher Bruce Shurtleff, but it wasn't enough to beat the Detroit Wolverines. Detroit won the Atlantic Avenue Grounds contest, 5-3. Shurtleff threw 8.0 innings of 4-hit ball for the losing team. Detroit reliever Fred Harrison picked up the win, raising his record to 12-2. Layton Taylor was tagged with the loss. The win for the Wolverines raised their record to 45-45.

Steve Tingle provided a timely hit. The Detroit pinch hitter delivered a 2-run triple in the top of the ninth inning to put the Wolverines on top, 5-3. It was his only hit in the game, but he made it count.

"It takes a lot of things to win a ballgame," said Detroit manager Kurt Peterson. "It's usually not just one thing."
