The New York Empires rode a solid performance from 26-year-old starting pitcher Jon Pierce to a win, beating the Detroit Wolverines, 4-1, at Wolverine Field. Pierce, the winner, moves to 14-5. He threw 7 innings of 3-hit ball, while fanning 5 and giving up 2 walks. New York is now 67-50, Detroit 67-47.

Paul Brower had a direct impact on the outcome. Brower contributed a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth inning to put New York up, 2-1.
