Traders Come Up Short at Kansas City, 4-3
|
The Kansas City Bulls did just enough to sneak past the Chicago Traders, 4-3, at Independence Field. Kansas City pitcher Mel Hartman, in particular, had a standout performance. Hartman, now 12-5, was the winner. In 5.2 innings, he gave up 5 hits, while striking out 6, walking 1, and allowing 3 runs. John Ferguson, credited with the save, is now 1 for 2 in save opportunities.
The Bulls got an important contribution from first baseman Tom Austin, who in the bottom of the third punched a 2-2 fastball into center for a run-scoring double. It was his 3rd double of the season and put the Bulls ahead, 4-2.
In postgame comments to the Kansas City Daily, Austin said, "If the effort is there, the wins will come."
Chicago has now lost 4 consecutive games.
