Emeralds Pop Wolverines, 14-3
|
The Seattle Emeralds defeated the Detroit Wolverines, 14-3, in part because of left fielder Don Gerwig. Gerwig was 1-2 with a home run, 2 walks, and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 2 for the Emeralds. Pat Burkholder earned the win to go to 9-9. He allowed 3 runs on 8 hits, with no walks and 6 strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work. The Emeralds, at 66-77, sit in 5th place in the American Baseball League Western Division.
Alex Rojas had a big 3-run home run for the Emeralds in the bottom of the third inning. With Seattle trailing 2-1 and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he sized up a splitter from Scott Litwak, who finished 3rd in the ABL in wins with 18 in 1971, and punished it. The result was his 5th home run of the season, which put the Emeralds on top, 4-2.
"We got our butts kicked," said Detroit manager Kurt Peterson.
