Chicago Beats Montreal, 6-5
|
The Chicago Hawks weathered an outstanding game by Montreal third baseman Ed Hudson to topple the Habitants, 6-5. Hudson went 2-4 with a home run. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. Doug Smilanich picked up the win, lifting his record to 2-3 on the season. He struck out 1 and walked 2 in 5.2 innings, while yielding 5 runs. The victory puts Chicago at 22-32.
The Hawks got a big at-bat from left fielder Ernie Ronnebaum. For the game, Ronnebaum was 1-4 with a home run, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. In the bottom of the first, with runners on 1st and 2nd, he stroked a 3-run home run. His 6th home run of the season gave Chicago a 3-0 lead.
"We put a lot of pressure on ourselves," Ronnebaum told a Chicago Daily reporter. "Sometimes we just need to relax."
