Chicago Befuddled by Payne in 2-0 Loss Thursday, June 27th , 1974 Ed Payne kept the Chicago Traders hitters from doing much damage at Union Field. Chicago could only muster 9 hits and draw no walks against the left-handed Payne, who controlled them throughout the game. San Diego won the contest, 2-0. Payne added 3 strikeouts in his complete-game effort. "I don't know if I was on or if they were off today," Payne told reporters after the shutout win. "But whatever it was, I hope it happens again next time."
