Atlanta's Darnell Reaches 2000 Hits Monday, August 16th , 1976 What a day for John Darnell. The 35-year-old Atlanta third baseman reached the 2000-hit mark today and the Generals whipped the Chicago Hawks 6-1. Darnell told reporters, "It's good to finally get it. The closer you get to 2000, the harder it is to get there. Now the pressure is off and I can go back to just playing ball." He went 2 for 4 in the game to reach the milestone. Darnell has played in 1792 games and is hitting .286 lifetime with 650 RBIs, 2000 hits, 417 doubles, 170 triples, and 54 home runs. He has scored 1049 times and stolen 610 bases.
