Red-Hot Bat: Frost Collects Cycle
Monday, July 14th , 1975
Jackie Frost did everything he could for the Houston Drillers -- literally.
The 30-year-old center fielder hit a single, a double, a triple and a home run for the Drillers, going for the cycle and helping them get past the San Francisco Seagulls, 13-12, at Sam Houston Field.
"Yeah, I was some kind of hitter in this game," Frost reflected later. "It was like all I had to do was close my eyes and swing the bat."
In a game headed for the record books, Frost banged out 4 hits in 6 at-bats and totaled 5 RBI and 2 runs scored. Speaking with the press about the feat, he attributed it to "a lot of luck."
"A triple is so hard to hit," he said. "To just decide to get one in a game when you need it for a cycle, it's impossible. Usually something weird has to happen, the ball kicking past an outfielder or somebody falling down. There's a ton of luck in hitting for a cycle."
Jackie Frost hit a three-run home run off Ray Brooks in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, flied out in the 4th, hit a two-run triple in the 6th, doubled in the 8th, grounded out in the 10th and was hit by a pitch in the 13th.
This season, Frost is batting .285 with 9 home runs.
