Behind Smilanich, Chicago Blanks Baltimore, 1-0 Sunday, September 11th , 1977 The Baltimore Lords were almost helpless in their 1-0 loss to the Chicago Hawks and hurler Doug Smilanich. Smilanich kept the Lords confused all game, spinning a 3-hit shutout. "Tip your hat to Smilanich," Baltimore manager Steve Read said in a postgame interview. "He kept us off balance all night." The 24-year-old right-hander had no walks and 6 strikeouts in a strong performance. "It just happened to be one of those games where even when I made mistakes, they either fouled them off or someone would make a fine defensive play," Smilanich said. "It was just one of those games that things went my way." To this point in the season, Smilanich shows a 8-12 record, 30 starts, 164 innings, 76 strikeouts and a 5.54 ERA.
